- 1763 – John Molson, who established the Champlain and Saint Lawrence Railroad, the first railway into Canada, is born (d. 1836).
- 1879 – A storm destroys part of the Tay Rail Bridge (pictured) in Scotland while a passenger train is traversing it; the event is commemorated in a poem by William McGonagall, The Tay Bridge Disaster.
- 1906 – After his death, Alexander J. Cassatt is succeeded as president of the Pennsylvania Railroad by James McCrea.
- 1917 – The United States Railroad Administration, created on December 26, officially takes control of American railroads.
