Name change
[edit]Does anyone know when and why the town's name changed from Whitley to Whitley Bay? I remember hearing a story about it years ago (something to do with being confused with Whitby) but can't remember the details. I would think that story, if properly sourced, would be a good addition to this (really good!) article? Smeddlesboy 16:45, 14 October 2006 (UTC)
The story is that a corpse was sent to Whitby by mistake - look at [1] (pdf) It doesn't go into all the details of how the name was changed - ISTR that people were asked for suggestions, but whether anything other adding 'bay' was seriously considered I don't know. Spanish City
[edit]Has Spanish City been demolished? Last time I saw it it was still there, but was supposedly about to be pulled down. That was about 1998 I think. So I'm assuming it went ahead. Very sad in a way, when I was a kid of about six, seeing the Spanish City lights from the car window was always so exciting! GRAHAMUK 11:34, 16 Nov 2003 (UTC)
- No, the Spanish City is still standing and is just about to go under well overdue refurbishment. Plans are for a new library and pool in the dome. PIEBOYJR 14:32, 15 Feb 2006 (UTC)

Clean up
[edit]This article was in dire need of cleanup. It looked like a bad advert with poor grammar, multiple repetitions and major peacock and puffery. I tagged the article some time ago and have done some work on it. There is still more to be done. Is it encyclopedic to state that the retailers Boots, Tesco etc. have shops in town or the shopping centers/streets where they are located, I don't think so. I took out such banality as discussion of available parking. The article is overloaded with pictures, I suggest a Commons category with link for most of them or a gallery at the end of the article. - - MrBill3 (talk) 02:13, 2 December 2013 (UTC)
Famous names
[edit]No mention of two well know sons of Whitley Bay who should be on the list: Ryan Molloy (singer and actor) who played Frankie Valli in Jersey Boys for eight years in London and on Broadway. Ryan went to Monkseaton High School and his parents still live in the town. And do you know who has recorded more audiobooks than anyone else in Europe? (around 700+) - Gordon Griffin (actor, producer and director) who is also from Whitley Bay. [1]gordongriffin.com Gordon Griffin (talk) 15:52, 19 April 2015 (UTC)Cuthbert </ref>
