Wikipedia:Requested moves
This page has an administrative backlog that requires the attention of willing administrators. This notice will be automatically removed by RMCD bot (talk) when the backlog is cleared. |
Requested moves is a process for requesting the retitling (moving) of an article, template, or project page on Wikipedia. For retitling files, categories and other items, see When not to use this page.
Please read the article titling policy and the guideline regarding primary topics before moving a page or requesting a page move.
Any autoconfirmed user can use the Move function to perform most moves (see Help:How to move a page). If you have no reason to expect a dispute concerning a move, be bold and move the page. However, it may not always be possible or desirable to do this:
- Technical reasons may prevent a move; for example, a page may already exist at the target title and require deletion, or the page may be protected from moves. See: § Requesting technical moves.
- Requests to revert recent, undiscussed, controversial moves may be made at WP:RM/TR. If the new name has not become the stable title, the undiscussed move will be reverted. If the new name has become the stable title, a requested move will be needed to determine the article's proper location.
- A title may be disputed, and discussion may be necessary to reach consensus: see § Requesting controversial and potentially controversial moves. The requested moves process is not mandatory, and sometimes an informal discussion at the article's talk page can help reach consensus.
- A page should not be moved and a new move discussion should not be opened when there is already an open move request on a talk page. Instead, please participate in the open discussion.
- Unregistered and new (not yet autoconfirmed) users are unable to move pages.
Requests are generally processed after seven days. If consensus to move the page is reached at or after this time, a reviewer will carry out the request. If there is a consensus not to move the page, the request will be closed as "not moved". When consensus remains unclear, the request may be relisted to allow more time for consensus to develop, or the discussion may be closed as "no consensus". See Wikipedia:Requested moves/Closing instructions for more details on the process.
Wikipedia:Move review can be used to contest the outcome of a move request as long as all steps are followed. If a discussion on the closer's talk page does not resolve an issue, then a move review will evaluate the close of the move discussion to determine whether or not the contested close was reasonable and consistent with the spirit and intent of common practice, policies, and guidelines.
When not to use this page
Separate processes exist for moving certain types of pages, and for changes other than page moves:
- Making an uncontroversial move – if you can, be bold and do it yourself! If you can't, see § Requesting technical moves.
- Renaming a category – propose the move at Wikipedia:Categories for discussion.
- Renaming a stub template – propose the move at Wikipedia:Categories for discussion.
- Renaming an image or other file – see Wikipedia:Moving a page § Moving a file page.
- Moves from draft namespace or user space to article space – Unconfirmed users: add
{{subst:submit}}
to the top of the article. See Wikipedia:Articles for creation. Confirmed users: Move the page yourself. - Merging two articles – make a request at Wikipedia:Proposed mergers, or be bold and do it yourself.
- Splitting an article – make a request at Wikipedia:Proposed article splits, or be bold and do it yourself.
- Requesting that page histories be merged – list them at Wikipedia:Requests for history merge.
- Contesting a move request close – use the Wikipedia:Move review process.
Undiscussed moves
Autoconfirmed editors may move a page without discussion if all of the following apply:
- No article exists at the new target title;
- There has been no previous discussion about the title of the page that expressed any objection to a new title; and
- It seems unlikely that anyone would reasonably disagree with the move.
If you disagree with a prior bold move, and the new title has not been in place for a long time, you may revert the move yourself. If you cannot revert the move for technical reasons, then you may request a technical move.
Move wars are disruptive, so if you make a bold move and it is reverted, do not make the move again. Instead, follow the procedures laid out in § Requesting controversial and potentially controversial moves.
Requesting technical moves
If you are unable to complete a move for technical reasons, you can request technical help below. This is the correct method if you tried to move a page, but you got an error message saying something like "You do not have permission to move this page, for the following reasons:..." or "The/This page could not be moved, for the following reason:..."
If you are here because you want an admin to approve of your new article or your proposed page move, you are in the wrong place.

- To list a technical request: Uncontroversial technical requests subsection and insert the following code at the bottom of the list, filling in pages and reason:
This will automatically insert a bullet and include your signature. Please do not edit the article's talk page.{{subst:RMassist|current page title|new title|reason=edit summary for the move}}
the - If you object to a proposal listed in the uncontroversial technical requests section, please move the request to the Contested technical requests section, append a note on the request elaborating on why, and sign with ~~~~. Consider pinging the requester to let them know about the objection.
- If your technical request is contested, or if a contested request is left untouched without reply, create a requested move on the article talk and remove the request from the section here. The fastest and easiest way is to click the "discuss" button at the request, save the talk page, and remove the entry on this page.

- Project Gotham Racing (video game) → Project Gotham Racing (move · discuss) – As the latter has been redirected to the former, the disambiguated name is no longer needed. Sceeegt (talk) 22:16, 19 September 2024 (UTC)
- Would like to see some talkpage discussion before WP:BLARing what appears to be a notable article. Reverted. 162 etc. (talk) 16:01, 20 September 2024 (UTC)
- Magnolia Hotshots → Magnolia Chicken Timplados Hotshots (currently a redirect back to Magnolia Hotshots) (move · discuss) – Magnolia Chicken Timplados Hotshots is the full name of the team and it is written also in their logo. Gayviewmahat (talk) 21:48, 19 September 2024 (UTC)
- Generally we go with the common name rather than the official name. I did a brief search to see if I could see which is the obvious common name, but I'm not finding anything conclusive. I am seeing both usages - ESPN for example seems to prefer the full name at least once in the article, while a few other sources are just using "Magnolia Hotshots" - a discussion may be a good idea as sports team names tend to get a lot of attention. ASUKITE 14:39, 19 September 2024 (UTC)
- @Gayviewmahat moved to contested for now until we can determine the actual common name ASUKITE 15:18, 19 September 2024 (UTC)
- Global Savings Group → Atolls (currently a redirect instead to Atoll) (move · discuss) – Company rebranded and changed name Ben01807 (talk) 10:58, 20 September 2024 (UTC)
- Firstly, we follow the common name for titles, not necessarily the official name, per WP:NAMECHANGES, we can accept modern reliable, independent sources documenting the name change, but we will need to see such sources first. That said, "Atolls" is plural for Atoll, which is the primary topic in this case, so any move to "Atolls" would need to be disambiguated to something such as Atolls (marketing company). ASUKITE 13:53, 20 September 2024 (UTC)
- @Ben01807 moved to contested until we can find sources for name change & choose a disambiguated title ASUKITE 13:54, 20 September 2024 (UTC)
- There's also no chance that Atoll isn't the primary topic here. 162 etc. (talk) 15:51, 21 September 2024 (UTC)
- Ibrahim Aqil (Hezbollah) → Ibrahim Aqil (move · discuss) – The Hezbollah figure, assassinated earlier today by Israel, is the clear primary topic over the taekwondo athlete, Ibrahim Aqil (taekwondo). I have just moved the athlete article from Ibrahim Aqil, and redirected that page to the Hezbollah article. — Goszei (talk) 17:18, 20 September 2024 (UTC)
- This is a new article and the original page move was not discussed, or even mentioned on either talk page. For whatever reason, the original contributor chose to use a disambiguated title, without moving the original article. Now the redirect has been changed, the first move cannot be undone. The redirection of Ibrahim Aqil has left me wondering where the disambiguation page had gone to, until I found there wasn't one. Currently this is confusing for readers who are not familiar with how many different articles about an Ibrahim Aqil that Wikipedia has, which is two. I think this proposal should be discussed as a proposed move with the other contributors to both articles on the respective talk pages, first, to determine if there is support for what has happened. - Cameron Dewe (talk) 18:56, 20 September 2024 (UTC)
- Original Kart → OK (karting) (currently a redirect back to Original Kart) (move · discuss) – WP:CONCISE Mb2437 (talk) 16:53, 21 September 2024 (UTC)
- Evening Standard British Film Awards 2009 → Evening Standard British Film Awards 2008 (move · discuss) – The article's description stated that the 2009 Evening Standard British Film Awards are intended to honor British and Irish films of 2008 and just happen to be held the following year and not at the end of the filmmaking year like the BIFA Awards do, for example. Even the Evening Standard British Film Awards main article itself refers to 2009 winners as 2008 ones (see that year in the 2001–2010 Winners section), so to avoid confusion, it is better to be renamed according to the main page article. LordTort (talk) 17:29, 13 September 2024 (UTC)
- Contesting this, it doesn't seem Uncontroversial. If the awards took place in 2009 then it seems like it's the 2009 awards, even if most of the films mentioned were released in 2008. I've also reverted a similar bold move from today on the 2008 edition. — Amakuru (talk) 21:36, 21 September 2024 (UTC)
- Special Forces Tab → Special Forces tab (currently a redirect back to Special Forces Tab) (move · discuss) – Parallel to Ranger tab and consistent with Army's own AR 670-1 document about insignia (and basic English/WP MoS), "tab" should be lowercase. I can't do the move myself because there's a redirect in the way (they should be swapped). — JohnFromPinckney (talk / edits) 19:52, 17 September 2024 (UTC)
- I wonder if Ranger tab should be moved instead so both words are capitalized in that title, because both of these military awards appear to be proper terms in which title case should be used. Also, both articles are currently written as if that is the case, with the title at the top of the Ranger tab article being the only exception. ---DOOMSDAYER520 (TALK|CONTRIBS) 20:05, 17 September 2024 (UTC)
- Thanks for looking at this, Doomsdayer. When I first stumbled across this, I was irritiated by the "Tab" on these things, as it seemed another case of overcapitalization, but I looked around to see if it wasn't exactly that: a special, proper noun. Tabs of the United States Army used (already, before I started standardising the texts) a mixture. There was some inconclusive mention on the Talk of that article, but otherwise, I haven't found any discussion, just a bit of sloppiness.
- For me, the deciding factor (apart from my understanding of English rules) was the use by the Army itself in the Wear and Appearance of Army Uniforms and Insignia document I linked to. I figure, if anybody can be expected to inappropriately overcapitalize words, it'd be the US military, but they consistently downcase not just "the tab" but "the airborne tab", e.g., at p.2 (even "airborne" is lowercase there). Also I find at [1] ("...awarded the Governor's Dozen tab...") and [2] (PDF's p.11, 4th-last paragraph "arctic tab").
- Unfortunately, I've already gone ahead and made changes to article text as well as redirects (where I could) so as to unify the mix of usages contrary to Army/military usage. I didn't mean to throw a WP:FAIT situation at you, so I've stopped to see what you decide. If you think these changes might, in fact, be controversial, I can open up discussions on the (I think) four pages I've tweaked. If folks don't like what I've done, I'll go around with my reverting hat on (I mean my Reverting Hat). — JohnFromPinckney (talk / edits) 21:06, 17 September 2024 (UTC)
- If various articles in this area are sloppy and inconsistent in capitalization, then we absolutely need you to clean everything up. Your efforts are appreciated. If anyone familiar with these precise military terms pops up here, we may be able to nail down whether these terms should all be in Title Case or Sentence case. Whatever the ultimate verdict, reverting some of your recent edits and moving some remaining page titles shouldn't be too difficult. ---DOOMSDAYER520 (TALK|CONTRIBS) 12:49, 18 September 2024 (UTC)
- @JohnFromPinckney Sounds like more expert input is needed here. Perhaps a post on WT:MILHIST would help. --Ahecht (TALK

- Sitelen Pona → Sitelen pona (currently a redirect back to Sitelen Pona) (move · discuss) – The casing of the title should be lowercase and italicized as a foreign language term, and the term most often appears that way in official English language publications. LesVisages (talk) 16:12, 21 September 2024 (UTC)
- @LesVisages The proper names of multi-word writing systems are typically capitalized (see Chữ Hán, Ol Onal, Pahawh Hmong, Ersu Shaba script, etc.) --Ahecht (TALK
PAGE) 23:48, 21 September 2024 (UTC)- @Ahecht The names of writing systems are often proper names even in the original language, so it makes sense that most would have capitalization. The Vietnamese writing system chữ Nôm and the chữ Hán characters don't have the first word capitalized in-line since it's a common noun. The names are capitalized at the beginning of a sentence and in the title though, because Vietnamese has sentence case and title case. There is a similar case with isiBheqe soHlamvu in isiZulu. The case with toki pona is a bit different though since capitalization is limited to marking proper names, and the name sitelen pona is composed of two common words. It could be compared to varying capitalization standards in Lojban with its writing system named zbalermorna and Klingon (tlhIngan Hol) with its writing system named pIqaD or in aUI and palawa kani. The discussion process is used for potentially controversial moves. A move is potentially controversial if either of the following applies:
- there has been any past debate about the best title for the page;
- someone could reasonably disagree with the move.
Use this process if there is any reason to believe a move would be contested. For technical move requests, such as to correct obvious typographical errors, see Requesting technical moves. The technical moves procedure can also be used for uncontroversial moves when the requested title is occupied by an existing article.
Do not create a new move request when one is already open on the same talk page. Instead, consider contributing to the open discussion if you would like to propose another alternative. Multiple closed move requests may be on the same page, but each should have a unique section heading.
Do not create a move request to rename one or more redirects. Redirects cannot be used as current titles in requested moves.
Requesting a single page move
To request a single page move, click on the "New section" (or "Add topic") tab of the talk page of the article you want moved, without adding a new subject/header, inserting this code:
{{subst:requested move|New name|reason=Place here your rationale for the proposed page name change, ideally referring to applicable naming convention policies and guidelines, and providing evidence in support where appropriate. If your reasoning includes search engine results, please prioritize searches limited to reliable sources (e.g. books, news, scholarly papers) over other web results. You don't need to add your signature at the end, as this template will do so automatically.}}
Replace New name
with the requested new name of the page (or with a simple question mark, if you want more than one possible new name to be considered). The template will automatically create the heading "Requested move 23 September 2024" and sign the post for you.
There is no need to edit the article in question. Once the above code is added to the Talk page, a bot will automatically add the following notification at the top of the affected page:
A request that this page title be changed is under discussion. Please do not move this page until the discussion is closed. |
Unlike other request processes on Wikipedia, such as Requests for comment, nominations need not be neutral. Make your point as best you can; use evidence (such as Google Ngrams and pageview statistics) and refer to applicable policies and guidelines, especially our article titling policy and the guideline on disambiguation and primary topics.
WikiProjects may subscribe to Article alerts to receive RM notifications. For example, Wikipedia:WikiProject Biography/Article alerts/Requested moves is transcluded to Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Biography. RMCD bot notifies many of the other Wikiprojects listed on the talk page of the article to be moved to invite project members to participate in the RM discussion. Requesters should feel free to notify any other Wikiproject or noticeboard that might be interested in the move request, as long as this notification is neutral.
Single page move on a different talk page
Occasionally, a move request must be made on a talk page other than the talk page of the page to be moved. For example, a request to rename Wikipedia:WikiProject Articles for creation/Resources to Wikipedia:WikiProject Articles for creation/Reviewing and templates would need to take place at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Articles for creation because the talk page of the project page to be moved, Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Articles for creation/Resources, is a redirect to that centralized discussion page. In this type of case, the requested move should be made using the following code:
{{subst:requested move|reason=(the reason for the page move goes here).|current1=(present title of page to be renamed)|new1=(proposed title of page)}}
The |1=
unnamed parameter is not used. The |current1=
and |new1=
parameters are used similar to multiple page moves described below.
Requesting multiple page moves
A single template may be used to request multiple related moves. On one of the talk pages of the affected pages, create a request and format it as below. A sample request for three page moves is shown here (for two page moves, omit the lines for current3 and new3). For four page moves, add lines for current4 and new4, and so on. There is no technical limit on the number of multiple move requests, but before requesting very large multi-moves, consider whether a naming convention should be changed first. Discuss that change on the talk page for the naming convention, e.g., Wikipedia talk:Naming conventions (sportspeople).
To request a multiple page move, edit at the bottom of the talk page of the article you chose for your request, without adding a new header, inserting this code:
{{subst:requested move
| current1 = Current title of page 1
| new1 = New title for page 1 with the talk page hosting this discussion
| current2 = Current title of page 2
| new2 = New title for page 2
| current3 = Current title of page 3
| new3 = New title for page 3
| reason = Place here your rationale for the proposed page name change, ideally referring to applicable naming convention policies and guidelines, and providing evidence in support where appropriate. If your reasoning includes search engine results, please prioritize searches limited to reliable sources (e.g. books, news, scholarly papers) over other web results. You don't need to add your signature at the end, as this template will do so automatically.
}}
For example, to propose moving the articles Wikipedia
and Wiki
, put this template on Talk:Wikipedia
with current1
set to Wikipedia
and current2
set to Wiki
. The discussion for all affected articles is held on the talk page of the article where the template is placed (Talk:Wikipedia
). Do not sign the request with ~~~~
, since the template does this automatically (so if you sign it yourself there will be two copies of your signature at the end of the request). Do not skip pairs of numbers.
RMCD bot automatically places a notice section on the talk page of all pages that are included in your request except the one hosting the discussion, to call attention to the move discussion that is in progress and to suggest that all discussion for all of the pages included in the request should take place at that one hosting location.
For multi-move discussions hosted on a page which is itself proposed to be moved, it is not necessary to include the |current1=Current title of page 1
for the page hosting the discussion, as its current title can be inferred automatically. Occasionally the discussions for significant multi-move requests may be hosted on WikiProject talk pages or other pages in Project namespace, in which case it is necessary to include |current1=
to indicate the first article to be moved.
Request all associated moves explicitly
Please list every move that you wish to have made in your request. For example, if you wish to move Cricket (disambiguation) to Cricket because you do not believe the sport is the primary topic for the search term "Cricket", then you actually want to move two pages, both Cricket (disambiguation) and Cricket. Thus you must list proposed titles for each page affected by your request. For example, you might propose:
If a new title is not proposed for the sport, it is more difficult to achieve consensus for a new title for that article. A move request that does not show what to do with the material at its proposed target, such as:
is incomplete. Such requests may be completed as a request to decide the best new title by discussion.
- Cricket → ?
If a disambiguation page is in the way of a move, the request may be completed as proposing to add (disambiguation).

Commenting on a requested move
All editors are welcome to contribute to the discussion regarding a requested page move. There are a number of standards that Wikipedians should practice in such discussions:
- When editors recommend a course of action, they write Support or Oppose in bold text, which is done by surrounding the word with three single quotes on each side, e.g.
'''Support'''
. - Comments or recommendations are added on a new bulleted line (that is, starting with *) and signed by adding
~~~~
to the end. Responses to another editor are threaded and indented using multiple bullets. - The article itself should be reviewed before any recommendation is made; do not base recommendations solely on the information supplied by other editors. It may also help to look at the article's edit history. However, please read the earlier comments and recommendations, as well as prior move requests. They may contain relevant arguments and useful information.
- Vested interests in the article should be disclosed per Wikipedia:Conflict of interest § How to disclose a COI.
When participating, please consider the following:
- Editors should make themselves familiar with the article titling policy at Wikipedia:Article titles.
- Other important guidelines that set forth community norms for article titles include Wikipedia:Disambiguation, specific naming conventions, and the manual of style.
- The debate is not a vote; please do not make recommendations that are not sustained by arguments.
- Explain how the proposed article title meets or contravenes policy and guidelines rather than merely stating that it does so.
- Nomination already implies that the nominator supports the name change, and nominators should refrain from repeating this recommendation on a separate bulleted line.[a]
- Do not make conflicting recommendations. If you change your mind, use strike-through to retract your previous statement by enclosing it between <s> and </s> after the bullets, and de-bold the struck words, as in "•
SupportOppose".
Please remember that reasonable editors will sometimes disagree, but that arguments based in policy, guidelines, and evidence have more weight than unsupported statements. When an editor offers an argument that does not explain how the move request is consistent with policies and guidelines, a reminder to engage in constructive, on-topic discussion may be useful. On the other hand, a pattern of responding to requests with groundless opinion, proof by assertion, and ignoring content guidelines may become disruptive. If a pattern of disruptive behavior persists after efforts are made to correct the situation through dialogue, please consider using a dispute resolution process.
Closing a requested move
Any uninvolved editor in good standing may close a move request. Please read the closing instructions for information on how to close a move request. The Simple guide to closing RM discussions details how to actually close a requested move discussion.
Relisting a requested move
Relisting a discussion moves the request out of the backlog up to the current day in order to encourage further input. The decision to relist a discussion is best left to uninvolved experienced editors upon considering, but declining, to close the discussion. In general, discussions should not be relisted more than once before properly closing.[b] Users relisting a debate which has already been relisted, or relisting a debate with a substantial discussion, should write a short explanation on why they did not consider the debate sufficient to close. While there is no consensus forbidding participation in a requested move discussion after relisting it, many editors consider it an inadvisable form of supervote. If you want to relist a discussion and then participate in it, be prepared to explain why you think it was appropriate.
Relisting should be done using {{subst:RM relist}}
, which automatically includes the relister's signature, and which must be placed at the very end of the initial request after the move requester's signature (and subsequent relisters' signatures).
When a relisted discussion reaches a resolution, it may be closed at any time according to the closing instructions; there is no required length of time to wait before closing a relisted discussion.
If discussion has become stale, or it seems that discussion would benefit from more input of editors versed in the subject area, consider more widely publicizing the discussion, such as by notifying WikiProjects of the discussion using the template {{RM notification}}. Banners placed at the top of the talk page hosting the move request can often be used to identify WikiProjects suitable for notification.
Notes
- ^ A nominator making a procedural nomination with which they may not agree is free to add a bulleted line explaining their actual position. Additional detail, such as sources, may also be provided in an additional bullet point if its inclusion in the nomination statement would make the statement unwieldy. Please remember that the entire nomination statement appears on the list on this page.
- ^ Despite this, discussions are occasionally relisted more than once.
- This section lists all requests filed or identified as potentially controversial which are currently under discussion.
Do not attempt to edit this list manually; a bot will automatically update the page soon after the {{subst:Requested move}} template is added to the discussion on the relevant talk page. The entry is removed automatically soon after the discussion is closed. To make a change to an entry, make the change on the linked talk page. |
This list is also available in a page-link-first format and in table format. 71 discussions have been relisted.
- (Discuss) – Department of Defense police → Department of Defense Police – GrammarCapitilization; "Department of Defense Police" vice "Department of Defense police" -- attempted to move myself, cannot due to re-direct Despite being an 'umbrella term,' and not quite a wholly independent agency, the "DOD Police" is a proper noun and is referred-to as such by the FBI[1] -- it is difficult to locate sources as most DOD Police entities use their component branch title (e.g. Department of the Navy Police). Further, per WP:CONSISTENT ALL of the component entities -- Department of the Navy Police, Department of the Air Force Police, and Department of the Army Civilian Police (I have issues with this title, as "civilian' is not part of the agency's official name, but I digress.) capitalize "Police." I would argue that this does not violate WP:TITLECHANGES, as the title change is so minor, it could not possibly disrupt the article's stability, nor would it disrupt the manner in which induvials find, search, or other locate the article. - (Discuss) – 2019 El Paso shooting → 2019 El Paso Walmart shooting – Per WP:UCRN. Though at the time of the shooting (around 2019) the shooting was more commonly referred to as something in the vein of "El Paso shooting" by reliable sources, in recent years reliable sources trend towards calling it something akin to "El Paso Walmart shooting". Out of 50 articles published since 2020 about the incident, 42 mention Walmart in the title while 8 do not. The 'Walmart' aspect appears to be part of a commonly recognised naming convention, which should be reflected in the page's title. Reliable sources that tended to include 'Walmart' in their titles include CNN, PBS, BBC News, ABC News, AP News, The Independent, the Washington Post, NBC News and others. Local news sources, such as the Texas Tribune and El Paso Times, tended to also refer to 'Walmart' in their titles. I recommend '2019 El Paso Walmart shooting' as it fits other naming conventions. If needed, I can provide several of the referenced articles, though they can be found by Google search. Macxcxz (talk) 11:02, 15 September 2024 (UTC) — Relisting. Safari ScribeEdits! - (Discuss) – Baby, The Stars Shine Bright → Baby, the Stars Shine Bright (apparel) – New York Times (link), The Cut (link), and The Mercury News (link) uses the lowercase "t" for "the." Victoria & Albert Museum (link) uses both capitalizations, but there seems to be more of a precedence using the lowercase version. Even the English websites use the lowercase spelling (see the NYC location and SF location). Choosing the "entertainer" disambiguator because the subject is known as both a musician and actor. Additionally, it is unnecessary to disambiguate this article by using the family name because there are no other mononymous individuals with Wikipedia articles that share that name. Referring to the subject as his stage name would bring the article in line with other members of Shinee: Taemin, Onew, and Key Jonghyun currently redirects to Jong-hyun; propose moving over the redirect and putting a hatnote on this page saying something to the effect of "For other people with this given name, see Jong-hyun" RachelTensions (talk) 23:38, 22 September 2024 (UTC)
- (Discuss) – Assyrian–Chaldean–Syriac diaspora → Assyrian diaspora – Much like my request to rename "Assyrians/Syriacs in Sweden" to Assyrians in Sweden", the reasoning applies that the article refers to the same people as simply "Assyrian", while respecting that there are several different identifications for them such as "Syriac", "Chaldean", and "Aramean". Additionally, it would bring the article to the pattern of other articles that talk about the Assyrian diaspora, especially as the article is no longer prone to edit-warring as it was when it was first made. - (Discuss) – Senkaku Islands dispute → Diaoyu/Senkaku Islands dispute – This move is supported by principles of WP:COMMONNAME, precision, naturalness, and NPOVtitle. This article discusses a territorial dispute between China and Japan which has sometimes flared up. From the Chinese perspective, the islands are the Diaoyu islands. From the Japanese perspective, they are the Senkaku Islands. Our current title pre-supposes the Japanese perspective in Wikivoice. First, we should avoid this for principles of common name. Recent academic sources already in the article which use Senkaku/Diaoyu Islands dispute include at a minimum Wang (2024), Chen (2023), and Zhao (2023). An initial review of English google results also shows our article to be an outlier, with most sources using both names for the disputed islands. The move also helps precision, as the current title may be unclear to English-language readers general readers who may have first heard the Chinese usage but not be familiar with the Japanese usage yet. Finally, NPOV is served by not presuming the correctness of one view of the islands over another. Either Diaoyu/Senkaku or Senkaku/Diaoyu make sense - I think it is better to alphabetize so that no one presumes we are endorsing a claim, but at least in English I recognize that Senkaku/Diaoyu is more common order. The key point is to include both terms. JArthur1984 (talk) 16:06, 22 September 2024 (UTC)
- (Discuss) – Republic of China (1912–1949) → Republican China – Primarily per the naturalness and concision WP:CRITERIA. The use of "Republican China" as a term referring to this periodization and its associated state is simply ubiquitous in English-language sources, such as The Cambridge History of China.[2] By contrast, merely "Republic of China" is not used as a term referring specifically to the pre-1949 period, so a parenthetical disambiguator is arguably inappropriate. On that note, this change would also more elegantly distinguish the scope of this article from that of Taiwan. This specific move was previously suggested in 2018: suffice it to say, I did not find the opposing arguments convincing. Heading a few potential objections off at the pass: firstly, historiographical labels function perfectly well as article titles in situations like these, cf. July Monarchy, Revolutionary Catalonia, Nazi Germany. Secondly, several editors argued the terms are not synonymous, or that "Republican China" refers only to the mainland during this period; these seem clearly dubious to me, and no further explanation or evidence for such distinctions was provided in the previous discussion. One final note: I was motivated to pose this RM as the result an offsite discussion with Generalissima, who was asking about the current naming situation and pondering about starting an RM herself; I then offered to do it instead.
- (Discuss) – Rococo Revival → Rococo revival – Per MOS:CAPS, the Wikipedia guidelines specify that we should render something as a proper name only if it is "consistently capitalized in a substantial majority of independent, reliable sources". However, looking at a pair of ngrams for this, one comparing the capitalised form of the bare name against other common capitalisations - [17] and the other including the word "was" afterwards, to eliminate false positives from titles and suchlike - [18] - we can see that while 20 or 30 years ago the title-case version was very dominant, in recent times it has dwindled to almost neck-and-neck. Thus the stipulation above is no longer met, and we should render this in sentence case. Cheers — Amakuru (talk) 12:28, 21 September 2024 (UTC)
Chronically online is also the descriptive name, as chronically and acutely are two different things, with terminally and extremely possibly referring to acutely, which would be an inaccurate characterization. - (Discuss) – Pelican Lake (Kenora District) → Pelican Lake (Kenora District, Ontario) – I have started this move request because there is some inconsistency with the disambiguators used for geological and hydrological features within Canada, and I have chosen this example as a potential precedence to perform and/or propose moves of other related articles. I looked through a few of the guidelines (especially Wikipedia:Manual of Style/Canada-related articles) and I'm not finding anything concrete about which way this should be done. Per the move log, specifically this edit, Pelican Lake (Kenora District) is the current name of that article because Kenora District is the name of the article for the district rather than Kenora District, Ontario. If that is the way it should be done, then Pelican Lake (Cochrane District, Ontario) should be moved to Pelican Lake (Cochrane District) since the respective article's current title is Cochrane District instead of Cochrane District, Ontario. However, relating to similar United States subjects for geology (which seem go by "county, state" similar to Canada's "[county, municipality, or parish], [providence or territory]"), the "county, state" disambiguation is what is seemingly used more often than then just "county" in the event a county has a unambiguous name. With all this being said, I support moving Pelican Lake (Kenora District) to Pelican Lake (Kenora District, Ontario) and oppose moving Pelican Lake (Cochrane District, Ontario) from its current title. However, I am listing both for consistency since I believe their disambiguators need to be consistent; if the consensus sways against my perspective, then the disambiguators should at least be consistent. Among the eight women who have English Wikipedia articles, five are named "Michelle" and three are named "Michele", thus dropping the parenthetical qualifier "(disambiguation)" still appears to be relatively evenhanded and users researching the swimmer would not lose their ability to access her entry directly [the two WP:DABMENTIONS are the entry for co-author of Michelle Remembers and the redirect for male sportsman Michele Smith (cyclist)]. —Roman Spinner (talk • contribs) 16:51, 23 August 2024 (UTC) — Relisting. - (Discuss) – 2024 CrowdStrike incident → 2024 CrowdStrike-related IT outages – Been a few months since the last RM with consensus to move, but a flawed process resulting in no consensus on the new title. I am going to do a simpler RM, one that simply asks if the most popular title, that had an average score of 9/10 in the poll that was run, should be accepted. It seems clear to me the word "outage" needs to be in the title, "incident" is horribly vague an not the common name whatsoever. Its a little bit of a thorny one, since CrowdStrike caused the outage but CrowdStrike doesn't actually deliver the services themselves that crashed (Windows primarily but included other services). "2024 CrowdStrike-caused IT outages" might be more technically correct, however that seems awkward and unwieldy to me. If you don't like the current title but want a different one than proposed, please say what title you think is best and if many people want a different title we'll ping the involved editors to decide out of the main options presented. My primary goal is to get rid of the strange combination of the dash followed immediately by a closing parenthesis, which is usually a date range but in this case is not. There are less than 30 titles like that on the English Wikipedia that I could find. Note that there's a duplication of the content of the end of this list in List of New Testament minuscules (2901–). - (Discuss) – Nikola Kalinić → Nikola Kalinic – This nomination is a follow-up to the recently concluded Talk:Nikola Kalinić (footballer)#Requested move 7 September 2024. Since English language does not use accents or diacritics, the default option in the creation of English Wikipedia disambiguation page main title headers should be to likewise not add those marks to such headers unless every entry on a particular dab page uses them. Thus, in the case at hand, Nikola Kalinić should redirect to Nikola Kalinic, rather than Nikola Kalinic redirecting, as it currently does to Nikola Kalinić. — Roman Spinner (talk • contribs) 15:10, 17 September 2024 (UTC)
- (Discuss) – Kang Pan-sok → Kang Pan Sok – Trying another move req, this time with stronger evidence. I suspect the WP:COMMONNAME is "Kang Pan Sok", per this ngram. As a side note, 162 etc's argument in the prev move request was not quite correct. That part of McCune–Reischauer that asks for spaces in names is for North Korea's variant of the system. However, per MOS:KO, we're not supposed to use North Korea's variant. Pure MR asks for no spaces or hyphens in given names, as well as the use of diacritics. So in the prev move request the target should have been "Kang Pansŏk". Anyway water under the bridge. seefooddiet (talk) 13:23, 17 September 2024 (UTC)
- (Discuss) – Kim Yo-jong → Kim Yo Jong – Appears to be the WP:COMMONNAME, and matches the official spelling preference of North Korea (see Romanization of Korean (North)#Guide). Here's a mediocre Ngram, but anecdotally if you scroll through Google News it seems a large majority of recent articles use the spelling with the space in it. Side note: for move requests for North Korean people, the official romanization standard of North Korea alone should not be sufficient for approving a move. WP:NCKO recommends McCune–Reischauer, which does not have a space in the personal name. These kinds of moves should be made on a case-by-case basis with WP:COMMONNAME evidence provided first and foremost. seefooddiet (talk) 12:45, 17 September 2024 (UTC)
- (Discuss) – Matilda of Holstein → Mechtilde of Holstein – Per WP:COMMONNAME and WP:UE. The most common variants of her name are Mechtilde (Danish), Mechtild (Swedish) and Mechthild (German). There are some English sources for "Mechtild of Holstein", "Mechtilde of Holstein" and "Mechthild of Holstein", but nothing much for "Matilda of Holstein". She is too rarely discussed to have Ngram counts for any of the names. The article at Dansk biografisk Lexikon does give "Mathilde" as a variant, but I don't see that it would be used much in the sources. Most of the sources in the article use Mechtilde, and she had the most impact on Danish affairs, which is why I prefer the Danish spelling over the Swedish or German ones here. - (Discuss) – Éric Borel → Cuers massacre – This could go either way, but I think this article would be better scoped as an article on the event and not the perpetrator, given WP:BIO1E. Admittedly, a very large proportion of the coverage on the event is about Borel, so even as an event-based article it will probably still largely be about him, but given that he has no notability outside of it and how the event is covered I believe it will be easier to structure and improve as an event-based article. The common title for the event in French is "Tuerie de Cuers", literally Cuers massacre. There were killings in other locations but the sources call it this. Also not all of the victims were killed through shooting, so a title with that would be slightly misleading. This incident is usually referred to without the year in French given how notorious it was (I think it's the worst non-terror mass shooting in France), but admittedly is not too well known overseas so specifying the year may be necessary. - (Discuss) – Macedonia (ancient kingdom) → Kingdom of Macedonia – Per WP:NCDAB, there's every reason for this page to be at the naturally disambiguated title of "Kingdom of Macedonia" – a title for which this page is the unambiguous primary topic (it redirects here) – and very little reason for it to have a parenthetically disambiguated title given that the naturally disamiguated title exists. There was a previous RM on this, but it appears to have overlooked both the preference towards natural disamiguatiom at WP:NCDAB and modern usage patterns, with the Wikinav chart of the undisambiguated base term showing the vast gulf between traffic to North Macedonia versus any other "Macedonia". It is the same in page views. The proposed term is also abundant in scholarship. Given all of this context, and the reality that the current title is in any case tantamount to "Macedonia (kingdom of)", we may as well just flip the title and remove the brackets. - (Discuss) – Diddy → Diddy (disambiguation) – I propose this RM following Extorc's previous closure (Not Moved) almost 20 months ago. Since that time, the landscape has shifted, with updated pageviews and reliable sources reflecting the current usage of the term "Diddy", which should redirect to Sean Combs. WP:PRITOP has two primary topic requirements, both addressed here. Firstly, WP:PT1 is fulfilled, as Sean Combs is far more frequently associated with Diddy than any of the other topics. A review of pageview data from this Diddy disambiguation page shows a significant proportion of outgoing traffic directed toward Sean Combs. Numerous reliable sources refer to Combs by his widely used stage name (see WP:USATODAY, WP:RSPCNN, and WP:NYT).[48][49][50] A simple Google search confirms that results overwhelmingly favor the rapper over other uses. Meanwhile, the other topics currently listed under "Diddy" are of far less enduring notability and frequency of use. They would remain easily accessible via a hatnote on the Sean Combs article: In the case of WP:PT2, while the strongest argument which was used to oppose the previous RM claimed that "Diddy" does not meet the primary topic standard in terms of long-term significance, the reality is that no other topic linked to "Diddy" has proven to be more significant or widely recognized; thus, redirecting "Diddy" to Sean Combs is appropriate as he clearly dominates the association with the name. Given none of the Universal Studios theme parks are simply called "Universal Studios" (unlike Disneyland, the original park is called Universal Studios Hollywood), and neither the theme park company nor the film studio is called "Universal Studios", the parent company is the only subject that is not a partial title match and can be regarded as the primary topic, distinguished by WP:SMALLDETAILS (a hatnote can address any confusion). If editors disagree and believe this article is not the primary topic, then this redirect should point to Universal Pictures, Universal Destinations & Experiences, or Universal Studios Hollywood, or be converted into a disambiguation page (I would support this as my second choice). - (Discuss) – Fredi Beleri → Fredis Beleris – "Fredis Beleris" is the name that Beleris chose to use for himself as proved by the official website of the EU parliament. "Fredi Beleri" is common only in Albania because Albanian authorities systematically removed, and still remove, the "S" from all names of the members of the ethnic Greek Minority, without giving the option to people to choose. Please note that I am not talking about the official name which includes the name "Dionysios". My point is that Fredis Beleris is a person who should be called with the name he chose and not with an incorrect name that is enforced in Albanian documents although Beleris has already made effort to write his name in a different way in the Greek documents. Beleris is neither a town nor a mountain so that wikipedia calls him with the name other people chose for him. Beleris is a human and became popular because he aims at protecting the violation of human rights of the ethnic Greek Minority in Albania, and "being called" with his correct name is one of them. In Beleris' case, the official name in Greece and EU matches the one he uses for himself, so there is no doubt about official versus common. The only doubt is about using a name enforced by Albanian authorities 50 years ago or accepting the name he likes for himslef. Open Free Eye (talk) 18:35, 15 September 2024 (UTC)
- (Discuss) – OMD → OMD (disambiguation) – Seems a WP:UCS move, since the popular band has two official monikers in "Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark" and "OMD", being billed as the latter on almost all of their releases since 1983. This move would allow for the OMD page to be redirected to Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark (I'd suggest that some 99% of people punching in the letters "OMD" are looking for the 40 million-selling chart group), with disambiguation notes added at the top of the article, in the style of Electric Light Orchestra (who are in an identical situation with their acronym, ELO). - (Discuss) – Pornography laws by region → Restrictions on pornography – Someone may have a better idea for a rename, so I'm seeking input. The current formulation — "laws" – is not sufficiently precise (WP:PRECISION), limiting the scope of addressing, in addition to "laws" in the sense of de jure aspects, also the enforcement situation by governments. For instance, South Korea is listed in the table as a country where production and distribution are prohibited, but appears nonetheless green in the accompanying map; China does not formally criminalise possession, yet there was a controversial 2002 incident of police breaking into a couple's home whilst they watched pornography, fining and jailing them (article in Chinese); in Egypt, there have been some statements by courts and prosecutors following the growth of Islamist politics in the immediate aftermath of the 2011 revolution, yet internet pornography is not blocked, unlike in some other Arab countries. Clearly, the article has been — and should be better — addressing both the de jure and quasi-legal situations. The present title yields undesired ambiguity. Similar Wikipedia titles include Restrictions on TikTok in the United States and Restrictions on cell phone use while driving in the United States. It would make little sense to prefer e.g. "Legality of TikTok"/"Laws on TikTok in the United States" over its present title. Y. Dongchen (talk) 13:57, 15 September 2024 (UTC)
- (Discuss) – Tropical Storm Conson (2021) → Tropical Storm Conson – Can this page be moved to just Tropical Storm Conson? As Daniel boxs stated above, the name was retired after the 2021 Pacific typhoon season. While there was a more notable iteration of Conson last 2010, it was a typhoon. This is the only page that is named "Tropical Storm Conson"— the 2004 and 2010 iterations were typhoons, and the 2016 iteration redirects you to the 2016 typhoon page, so it's a little distinctive compared to the previous Conson iterations. - (Discuss) – Tropical Storm Kompasu (2021) → Tropical Storm Kompasu – This is the worst incarnation of "Kompasu" out of the four times the name had been used, with 15 more deaths than its 2010 usage. The 2004 and 2016 tropical storms were also insignificant, for that matter; clicking on these links will redirect you to the years' Pacific typhoon season pages. I'd say this page shouldn't have the year in it; when Kompasu formed 3 years ago, it was very large and caused extensive flooding across PH, too. This incarnation was clearly more notable. - (Discuss) – Giacomo Benvenuti (composer) → Giacomo Benvenuti – A disambiguation page was recently created and this page was moved without discussion by Ortizesp under an argument of WP:NOPRIMARY. However, I think there is a clear primary in this case. The composer and musicologist are the subject of numerous scholarly works in a google books, google scholar, etc. with many entries in various music encyclopedias/general encyclopedias published in Italy/ academic works across more than a century of time. For example, here is a rather lengthy encyclopedia entry in Italian that is viewable without subscription access: https://www.treccani.it/enciclopedia/giacomo-benvenuti_(Dizionario-Biografico)/# The footballer is an obscure minor and recent sports figure. I think its clear based on the published literature that the composer is the WP:PRIMARY target. I further note that disambiguation policy is not to create a dab until there are a minimum of three entries. There is no need for a dab page, just a hat note.4meter4 (talk) 14:59, 6 September 2024 (UTC) — Relisting. Reading Beans 02:56, 15 September 2024 (UTC)
- (Discuss) – Sfântu Gheorghe, Transylvania → Sfântu Gheorghe – This page was moved unilaterally after 20 years. I contend it should be moved back, because this is the primary topic. This Sfântu Gheorghe is a city and a county seat, the others are villages. If we must disambiguate, the proper target is “Sfântu Gheorghe, Covasna”, because Transylvania is not an extant administrative unit. Biruitorul Talk 15:40, 14 September 2024 (UTC)
- (Discuss) – Eric XI of Sweden → Erik Eriksson (king) – The WP:COMMONNAME for this king is "Erik Eriksson". * Ngram shows that Erik Eriksson has been more common in the literature since 1910 or so. However, "Erik Eriksson" is also a common name for other people, so the full curve for "Erik Eriksson" cannot be attributed to the king. The decline in the use of "Eric XI" is more clear. * Reliable sources usually use the name Erik Eriksson. See e.g. GBooks search for Erik+1222+1250. Typical example is the Cambridge History of Scandinavia. Britannica does not have a dedicated page for him, but the "Learn more page" is titled Erik Eriksson. *
There are a lot of other Erik Erikssons (dab page), and the king is not the primary topic.For disambiguation, I suggest the parenthetical disambiguation, which would be a concise choice. I don't believe our hands are tied very strongly by WP:NCROY here since its applicability to medieval Sweden is somewhat dubious. These patronymic names are not of the "common stock", and Sweden was not a hereditary monarchy at the time. — Jähmefyysikko (talk) 04:50, 31 August 2024 (UTC) — Relisting. - (Discuss) – Moggy → Domestic cat (landrace) – Wikipedia is a worldwide resource. Cats are found worldwide. There is no place for a localized colloquialism to be a MAIN page reference on Wikipedia. I am located in the United States and never once have I ever heard the term “moggy” used to refer to a cat. The merging of Domestic short-haired cat and Domestic long-haired cat was an appropriate move as the only difference is the gene for hair growth. However, I don’t understand why a slang term page was revived from like, 2007 to merge the two pages together. Wikipedia Manual of Style in the Opportunities for Commonality section states that as an international English-speaking Wikipedia, using universally accepted terms is much more appropriate. For example, “to mog” or “mogging” in Gen Alpha terms - see mog. Nobody outside of Britian or Australia even knows what a moggy is. To make things messier, there were previous merges and fights about “moggy” vs. “moggie.” Y’all do not need a page for your local colloquialism. Wikipedia:Manual of Style#Opportunities for commonality bullet points 1-4. My new write-up for the beginning of the new article also explains this landrace breed, using hyphenation glossing as is suggested by the Manual of Style: A Domestic shorthair or Domestic longhair cat, sometimes regionally referred to as a moggy, is a landrace breed of cat reproducing without human intervention for type. The vast majority of cats worldwide lack any pedigree ancestry. The landrace can include cats living with humans or in feral colonies. Gene flow moves between the two populations as feral cats are tamed, housecats are released, and free-roaming unneutered cats breed freely. - (Discuss) – Ryan Whitney → Ryan Whitney (ice hockey) – Firstly, there is no clear WP:PRIMARYTOPIC between Ryan Whitney and Ryan Whitney (actress) (see similar page view numbers, suggesting equal readership). Ryan Whitney used to be called Ryan Newman, which is where all the problems start. However, after three years, two failed RMs, and a unilateral move by a user, we're passed the WP:TOOSOON stage. Let's say Ryan Whitney (actress)'s WP:COMMONNAME is actually Ryan Whitney (more on that later), and we manage to agree that there is no PRIMARYTOPIC, then, we need to move the pages accordingly and create a proper disambiguation page, instead of what is now at Ryan Whitney (disambiguation).
Next, for the case of Ryan Newman (racing driver), the page needs to be moved to Ryan Newman, since he would be the WP:PRIMARYTOPIC for the name "Ryan Newman". We could leave a hatnote at the top so that readers looking for the former Ryan Newman, now Ryan Whitney, could find her. I don't think a Ryan Newman (disambiguation) page is necessary, but let me know. Ryan Dean Newman can stay as is, and we can leave a hatnote if need be.Alternate proposal
: if you disagree with Ryan Whitney's WP:COMMONNAME being Ryan Whitney, I suggest moving Ryan Whitney (actress) to Ryan Whitney Newman, which is used in a fair chunk of sources and on places like her Instagram page. Ryan Newman (racing driver) is still moved to Ryan Newman, hatnotes are still left at the top, but that way we can leave Ryan Whitney (the ice hockey player) where he is, and just leave a hatnote at the top. Ryan Whitney (disambiguation) can be outright deleted. Ryan Dean Newman, no change but hatnotes where needed. - (Discuss) – Qi (Henan) → Qǐ (state) – Currently this is the only article in Category:Ancient Chinese states that isn't disambiguated by the word "state". Several other reasons for the move request: Qi County, Hebi and Qi County, Kaifeng are both in Henan; the 12th-century puppet state Qi was also based in Henan; and several other polities named Qi also covered parts or the whole of Henan (including the Shandong-based Qi (state)). - (Discuss) – Stanisław Potocki (1659-1683) → Stanisław Potocki (Polish noble, died 1683) – For alignment with WP:NCPDAB, especially to remove the lifespan ranges (especially the one using a hyphen). These people have more specific titles (szlachcic, voivode, etc.), but I think they are not used in English, so I am just suggesting "Polish noble" for all of them. For one of these, we have the birth year, but for the others we do not, so it may be best to consistently use the death year for all of them. Note that Stanisław Potocki (1734–1802) redirects to Józef Potocki (1734/35–1802). This seems to be an artefact of a previous error; see Wikipedia:Redirects for discussion/Log/2022 January 13#Stanisław Potocki (1734–1802).
