[edit]Wondering how to edit this U.S. County Entry?
The WikiProject U.S. Counties standards might help.
This is lacking a History section, which is recommended in the WikiProject U.S. Counties standards.
Jessamine County was the site of accelerated migration from VA after the Revolutionary War. Some of the new settlers were Baptists, who had been reaching toward religious freedom in VA, when the Anglican Church was still the established church.
After settling for a generation or so, in the 1840's and 1850's many younger sons (and their wives) migrated from KY to new lands and opportunities in TN and MO. Others were attracted to Texas, traveling all the way by wagon.
Camp Nelson, based in Jessamine County, was important during the Civil War for supplying Union troops, recruiting and training swelling numbers of US Colored Troops, as well as supporting and educating their families. This was one of the early demonstrations of the African-American great desire and commitment to education.
This is not to stand for all the history that needs to be written, just to suggest that it has many facets. Parkwells 17:37, 20 September 2007 (UTC)
