Looks weird on mobile

[edit]

The style used by this template is, I think, meant to resemble the floating media boxes for images and so on. On desktop, it does. On mobile, image captions do not have borders or grey backgrounds, so the quote boxes look weird. I think that the mobile style should be tweaked to resemble image captions or {{blockquote}} for the mobile theme. Check out the example section from Alfred Hitchcock(27 May 2024) below in a mobile web browser to see the live template, the live blockquote template, and an example fix in the sandbox:

@GustavoCza, Belbury, Light show, KJP1, Paul 012, and Trailblazer101: I'm testing a bit before pushing anything live and have noticed a backlash when the template's appearance was changed before. I've pinged editors who objected. Some raised the idea that the change should have been discussed somewhere else (maybe Wikipedia talk:Featured article candidates & Wikipedia talk:Manual of Style?), so feel free to post notices. My preferences on mobile and full-width only are:
  1. Use a style very similar to the mobile {{blockquote}} style
  2. Use a style very similar to the mobile {{blockquote}} style, except with a grey background
You can see the two proposed defaults here on mobile. This change would not affect desktop or widths where the template can float, Rjjiii (talk) 12:22, 11 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
The mobile version seems good to me. GustavoCza (talkcontribs) 14:10, 11 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Assuming I’m understanding it, I certainly prefer the grey background to the white. If consensus is that we shouldn’t have the blue, although it seems to have been the accepted default for a very long time, then I would favour the grey. I very much appreciate the opportunity for discussion. KJP1 (talk) 05:42, 12 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Blue is just to show that custom background colors will be unaffected by changes to the default. Rjjiii (ii) (talk) 12:47, 12 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
With no strong consensus for a specific change, I'll move on to something else. I appreciate the input, Rjjiii (talk) 00:16, 24 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Unchanged background color in dark mode for captions of embedded Wikimedia Commons files

[edit]

Switching to dark mode changes the specified background colour for the quote-box text (parameter: bgcolor) to black, but that for the Wikimedia file-caption text (parameter: background-color) remains unaffected. Example: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wichita_Lineman#Background_and_content Birdman euston (talk) 02:49, 25 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

On closer examination, the specified background colour of the file-caption text does change in dark mode, but to white not black. Birdman euston (talk) 02:58, 25 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
The background color of the file caption is explicitly set to "background-color:AliceBlue;" in a div tag in that article. I removed it, and dark mode works fine. I don't think this has anything to do with the quote box template. – Jonesey95 (talk) 19:22, 25 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks - it's a Wikimedia file causing the problem, to be sure. Since editors often embed them in Wikipedia quote boxes, it's worth noting here that Wikimedia files' non-default background colours are apparently not (fully) compatible with Wikipedia's dark mode at present. Birdman euston (talk) 06:02, 26 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I am aware of problems with transparent SVG files, but I don't see anything wrong with the file on that page in dark mode, now that the custom caption background color has been removed. – Jonesey95 (talk) 14:13, 26 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
