Flores man dating

[edit]

may have survived into the 16th century

What is the reference for this? I removed it, and changed the date to 18000 years from 13000, based on the Nature reference added. NealMcB 18:55, 2004 Oct 28 (UTC)

Map

[edit]

The lower map does not make the position of Flores very clear.dunnhaupt (talk) 22:18, 12 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Confusing lead

[edit]
Flores is one of the Lesser Sunda Islands, an island arc with an estimated area of 14,300 km² extending east from the Java island of Indonesia.

Is 14,300 km² the area of Flores, or the total area of the Lesser Sundas? If the latter, it doesn't belong in the lead sentence of an article about Flores. The area shown in the box is smaller, but not enough smaller to account for the other islands.

I suggest: "Flores is the largest of the Lesser Sunda Islands in southeastern Indonesia, with an area of _____ km². Neighboring islands include Sumbawa to the west, Sumba to the southwest and Timor to the southeast." No need for the lede to explain what the LSI are; that's what links are for. —Tamfang (talk) 05:57, 25 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Portuguese language

[edit]

Is Portuguese language spoken at any level in Flores? Ethnologue website says it is: [1]. Emerson

Mistake

[edit]

The name "Flores" is first a Latin word, meaning "flowers". Latin language existed before Portuguese.

Where is the History Section?

[edit]

This article is underdeveloped. An island of 1.5 million people that has been inhabited for 1 million-plus years deserves a history section.

It's pretty offensive that it leads with the colonialists and remarks how "important" the missionaries were in protecting Flores from other colonialists. Let's start with this:

Tidying up and slightly reorganising bits of the lead section

[edit]

I've just done a rather large edit, moving a few bits around so I thought I'd better summarise them here:

- I agreed with the earlier comment on this Talk page that the area size cited in the Lead section was unclear. It wasn't referenced, the area figure in the box (which is referenced) is smaller, and later in the article there is a figure for the total area of all Regencies which is bigger - so I just deleted it. I guess it doesn't have to be in the opening anyway.

-I moved the bit about it being the 9th biggest island in Indonesia from Administration to the lead section.

- I moved the line about the 1992 earthquake to the history section. Why characterise an island in its opening by referece to an earthquake 25 years ago? Indonesia is in the Western perception disproportionately and unfairly associated just with disasters anyway.

Hope everyone can live with these edits. Northtowner (talk) 23:14, 12 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]
