- 1885 – The first train to travel the entire route of California Southern Railroad's track through Cajon Pass (pictured) carries a shipment of rails from Barstow to Riverside.[1]
- 1900 – Henry Villard, president of Northern Pacific Railway 1881–1884, dies (b. 1835).
- 1904 – The 157th Street station on New York City Subway's IRT Broadway–Seventh Avenue Line opens.
- 1931 – The Smithsonian Institution, in Washington, D.C., commemorates the 100th birthday of the John Bull, the world's oldest surviving operable steam locomotive, by operating its mechanism with compressed air.
