Smiley face

[edit]

"Before long even the signature yellow 'dot' of 'Sunshine' LSD was beginning to appear, stripped of its drug connections, as the happy face emblem of American feel-good culture."

hardly. the yellow smiley face was invented in 1963, in Worcester, Massachusetts, probably the most polar opposite city to San Francisco as you can get. http://www.straightdope.com/classics/a4_031.html — Preceding unsigned comment added by 207.59.86.5 (talkcontribs) 16:31, 27 July 2004 (UTC)[reply]

Different Groups

[edit]

Is it really accurate to call the Haight-Ashbury hippies 'rather non-political'? They were anti-war, enviromentalist, and pro-civil rights. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Flower exile (talkcontribs) 04:02, 3 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Allen Cohen and Michael Bowen

[edit]

About the roles of Allen Cohen and Michael Bowen in the event: there's a user User:Jjpancake who deleted a paragraph I'd added about Michael Bowen, and also downplayed Cohen's role from "major instigator" to "participant". (And I note that a while back, an anonymous user at 209.180.28.6 added a jibe about Micahel Bowen's self-promotional tendencies.) Ever account of the event that I've read at least has Cohen listed as a "co-organizer", and I see that Bruce Brugman (the publisher of the San Francisco Bay Guardian, and a guy who was around at the time) calls him the "major organizer":

http://www.sfbg.com/blogs/bruce/2007/08/the_human_bein_jan_l4_l967_to.html

This is Allen Cohen's own account, which includes some links to scans of organizational letters (I gather his centrality to the event has been challenged before...):

It would appear that Cohen and Bowen were indeed some of the major players, and someone who wants to argue otherwise really should put up some supporting references. -- Doom 01:53, 31 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

The Diggers; Why Aren't they Mentioned in this Article?

[edit]

After watching a documentary on the History Channel about this event I'm curious why a very important factor of this event was left out of the article. The Diggers, who were an organization that was involved with LSD. Matter of fact, the Human Be-In event, the Diggers added LSD into the free sandwiches that they were giving away at this event.

Curiously, The Diggers (The Diggers) are missing from the article.--68.60.141.135 (talk) 18:47, 19 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Presence of Big Brother

[edit]

Dave Getz, drummer for BBHC, says they were 500 miles away at the time of the event. Can this be corrected in the article, and what citation is needed? Dave posted this fact on Facebook. I'm guessing this is not sufficient.

Per Dave Getz: Regarding January 14th 1967: A lot of myth and misinformation exists and persists in the history of Rock and Roll. It permeates memory: on several occasions I have met older hippies who remember seeing and hearing Big Brother at the Be-In. Both Peter Albin and I KNOW we weren't there because we were 500 miles away. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Jlarthos (talkcontribs) 05:51, 25 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
