Unrelevant explanation of economic effects from subsidies/taxes.

[edit]

Concerning the agricultural subsidies/taxes, there is a whole block of text explaining why this hurts the swiss citizens. While the reasoning is correct, it's not really relevant, is it? The article is supposed to be a description of the economic situation of switzerland as-is. Not one of economic mechanics. Concerned text: Prices are not reduced because, in the absence of import tariffs, the price of food would settle to that of the cheapest provider (which would often be external to Switzerland thus more costly in food miles). Import tariffs rise the price of food and...

...

...which increases the profits of the producers; in other words, the State is in fact taxing the local population with an outcome which is actually merely to increase the profit of food producers."

I've added a notice for this as I consider the agricultural part extremely one-sided. Apart from the financial implications for Swiss citizens, there are also good arguments to be self-sustainable, and this might include government support of the agricultural sector in the way Switzerland provides it. The judging tone in the article does not seem fit for an encyclopedia. Did somebody screw with the page?

[edit]

The page is all messed up. example: "For much of the 16th century suffered from slow growth, and as of 2005 it dropped to fourth place among European states with populations above one million in terms of nominal Gross" 157.193.1.99 (talk) 08:51, 3 September 2009 (UTC)Shorack[reply]

Economy

[edit]

Does anybody have data on GPD and detailed activities, I believe Switzerland get a high GPD because of secret banking, and trading activites and also pharmaceutics companies as well as luxury. A lot of companies relocated their traders to switzerland and they are dealing for example a big part of the coffee in the world for example. I know the tax system is interesting for a lot of companies...any data about this? impact on economy? —Preceding unsigned comment added by Bloublou (talkcontribs) 20:11, 27 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Taxes

[edit]

No information on taxes?

What's up, the wikipaedia pinkos don't want the world to know that a superior tax system vastly outperforms EUs socialist ineficient sovietry? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 85.138.0.53 (talkcontribs) 21:41, 18 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Removal of sentence on agriculture "monopolizing workers" + bias

[edit]

"Domestic agriculture will monopolise labour that can be better deployed elsewhere": no it won't, not at 4.2% of the total workforce. The percentage comes from U.S. Department of State - Bureau of European and Eurasian Affairs. Updated June 2008. Work force (3.96 million):
Agriculture and forestry--4.2%.
Industry and business--25.6%.
Services and government--70.2%.

The general stand on agriculture policy expressed in this article, monopolizes on the economic aspect instead of keeping it in perspective of overall quality of life. The point, with their ultra-protected agriculture, is that they've managed to preserve a large part of food independency. Many people will bitterly regret in the not-so-far future that their countries haven't done the same. See present increasing rate of food riots, which the world-wide spreading of UG99 won't help (at least the Swiss will have chestnut to make bread with... :-)

The other blank out in this agriculture section is that the Swiss attributes agriculture subsidies under strict conditions of good environmental practice only, another thing that countless people will regret having missed doing. See Swiss Environmental Statistics. It reads:
"Environmental concerns in agriculture are addressed through certification of environmental management systems (EMS). In order to receive farm subsidies, farmers must obtain EMS certification by demonstrating that they: make a balanced use of fertilizers; use at least 7% of their farmland as ecological compensation areas; regularly rotate crops; adopt appropriate measures to protect animals and soil; make limited and targeted use of pesticides."

Note in passing that the numbers given in the article are riddled with inaccuracies, and so exageratedly biased that it's not worth fighting for: the bias is so obvious, can't see it changing people's opinion of Switzerland anyway... :-) Basicdesign (talk) 19:41, 14 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

This was written by some Free Trade fruitloop. "Oh my the price of food in Los Angelos is higher then the price of food in Denver, sometimes a 2 fold increase! California must have a Tariff on imported foods from the other 49 states" See how stupid that sounds? Yeah.98.165.16.149 (talk) 09:47, 7 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

clean-up required

[edit]

I'm afraid that this article is in a pretty mess. The writing is of poor standard, it's woefully undercited (and there are many sweeping claims), and the stats need updating. Tony (talk) 11:16, 9 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

What's an even more glaring problem with this article is that there is hardly a mention of Switzerland's best-known economic sector -- banking. Words cannot accurately describe my surprise that no one has bothered to pick this very low-hanging fruit. (I'd write it myself if I knew more than the most basic & vague facts.) -- llywrch (talk) 18:10, 9 January 2009 (UTC) Update: I did a little more searching, & found Banking in Switzerland, so I struck thru most of my comment. However, this article needs to add a section on this important part of Switzerland's economy -- which is far better known than Swiss ecological concerns. -- llywrch (talk) 18:18, 9 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hello everyone, I am working for the International Trade Centre (ITC), a UN/WTO agency that aims to promote sustainable economic development through trade promotion. I would like to propose the addition of an external link (http://www.macmap.org/QuickSearch/FindTariff/FindTariff.aspx?subsite=open_access&country=SCC757%7cSwitzerland &source=1|ITC Market Access Map) that leads directly to our online database of customs tariffs applied by Switzerland. Visitors can easily look up market access information for Switzerland by selecting the product and partner of their interest. I would like you to consider this link under the WP:ELYES #3 prescriptions. Moreover, the reliability and the pertinence of this link can be supported by the following facts 1) ITC is part of the United Nations, and aims to share trade and market access data on by country and product as a global public good 2) No registration is required to access this information 3) Market access data (Tariffs and non-tariff measures) are regularly updated

Thank you, Divoc (talk) 08:25, 16 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Wow, that's detailed. I don't have a problem with adding the link.Tobyc75 (talk) 11:23, 16 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Wrong Gini Coefficient

[edit]

Point 4 states that "Switzerland has a relatively high Gini coefficient of 0.8, similar to the US, indicating unequal distribution". I have no idea what kind of Gini Coefficient is used as the Wikipedia page https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_income_equality list Switzerland with a value of 0.33 and the US with a value of 0.41 for 2013. Other, more up to date sources outside of wikipedia indicate that while the Swiss Gini Coefficient is currently still in the low 30ies, the US Gini Coefficient has since risen to around 0.45. So the Swiss income distribution is actually relatively good, especially considering the fact that Switzerland is such a rich country. I have no idea where the wrong number and assertion that income inequality in Switzerland is particularly bad come from. The according sentence should be corrected since I have actually seen videos on youtube refering to such wrong 'facts' (although I dont know for sure that they got it here): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FOUADLs1dfg

Whistleblower reports

[edit]

I reverted this edit since the report is introduced without context and the study was, in my view, of low quality and therefore should not go into an encyclopedic article. Please discuss if you disagree. --hroest 19:33, 27 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]
