FYI--I added Han Dynasty Chinese art that depicts probably Shar pei dog head profile.
[edit]Hi, I added a photo of antique Han Dynasty Chinese art that depicts probably Shar pei dog head profile, and I found the photo on the internet--it was from abroad regarding Chinese art during the Han dynasty, Guangdong province. This is not my area of expertise, but I own Shar pei dogs, and I was interested in finding out about their history--I posted the Han dynasty art because I would want to see it. Also, within an hour, I found ancient art from the Han Dynasty, Guangdong province online from Asia. I found partially blue Fo Dog statues with Shar pei ears at some Buddhist temples, during the Han Dynasty online. This area of discovering the history of the Shar pei dog seems open and mysterious. It looks to me like they always had the wrinkles since the Han Dynasty. I consider them Buddhist temple dogs. Best of luck for additions to this topic. I do not visit Wikipedia regularly, so if you leave me a message or response, I may not read it right away. It is listed as being on religion.wikia.com That may be part of Wikipedia? Well, above is the link I found it on. HACNY (talk) 19:22, 16 January 2019 (UTC)
Merger proposal: Miniature Shar Pei
[edit]- The following discussion is closed. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made in a new section. A summary of the conclusions reached follows.
- The result of this discussion was merge. Cavalryman (talk) 04:09, 21 July 2020 (UTC)
I propose to merge Miniature Shar Pei into this article. The only reliable source I can find for the miniature version is from Desmond Morris who, in very short entry in his Dogs: the ultimate guide to over 1,000 dog breeds, says they are just a bred down variety of the original[1]. Cavalryman (talk) 00:48, 3 July 2020 (UTC)
Merge. However, there is not a lot to merge. Most of the references are from the "Miniature Shar Pei of America" club website, and that website is no longer operational. What is left is one newspaper interview from nearly 20 years ago with a club member and of dubious reliability. William Harristalk 04:28, 3 July 2020 (UTC)
- I will likely create a section or sub section with the above mentioned book as the primary if not only source used. Cavalryman (talk) 04:46, 3 July 2020 (UTC).
- I concur; a reasonable approach. William Harristalk 08:18, 3 July 2020 (UTC)

Temperament/personality?
[edit]As it stands, the article says basically nothing about the typical personality or temperament of the breed. Seems like a major omission. I don't feel qualified to do it myself, though I do own a part-Shar Pei dog.JohnMason (talk) 23:46, 10 March 2022 (UTC)
- Needs a reliable source independent of fanciers. A lot of temperament claims are nonsense made up by breeders to promote the breed. Traumnovelle (talk) 00:30, 17 February 2024 (UTC)

- Do you have a source? Wiktionary says the plural is Shar-Peis and the OED also attests 'Sharpeis'. Traumnovelle (talk) 00:32, 17 February 2024 (UTC)
